Rowdy Girl Sanctuary has a fantastic origin story. Renee King-Sonnen was determined to change her husband’s fourth generation cattle ranch into a sanctuary after being devastated each time a calf was taken from his mother and a cow was sold to slaughter. Her compassion for the cows was so strong and she was so determined that she raised $30,000 in four months to buy the cattle from her husband and transition the ranch to a sanctuary. Flash forward to today, they’re both vegan and do amazing work rescuing and caring for animals. Now, they’re expanding their work to not just help animals at their own sanctuary, but helping other ranchers make the transformation they did!

The Rancher Advocacy Program is the first of its kind. Their Rancher Advisory Council will be working with “industry experts to transition cattle ranches and animal farms away from animal agriculture into viable veganic, compassionate businesses.”

They recently announced their first summit which will take place on September 18-20, 2020 in Austin, Texas. According to the press release, it will “bring cattle ranchers, animal farmers, plant-based industry experts, manufacturers, activists, and environmentalists together to debate and determine solutions to the imminent concerns around global food production, the economy, animal protection and our climate.”

As King-Sonnen told One Green Planet: “Now we’re not only rescuing animals, but we are rescuing ranchers!”

Working with ranchers and farmers is a wonderful way of going straight to the source and teaching them about compassionate and alternative business choices. The organization Humane Society International has taken a similar approach with regard to dog meat in Asia. They’ve worked directly with dog meat farmers helping them find a different way to make their livelihood to help them move away from their current one. It’s been a very successful program that has led to many dog meat farms and markets being shut down in South Korea.

As outsiders we understand that these industries are cruel, but it’s important to understand that this is how people make their money, feed their families, and keep a roof over their head. It’s not as simple or as easy as it seems, but this new program will help ranchers and farmers understand why and how they should make the change!
