Humans have made life for marine animals incredibly difficult. From the 8.8 million tons of plastic that we dump into the oceans every year, to rampant Pollution and overfishing, we’re basically turning the world’s oceans into massive cesspools. While we might not recognize that our actions are having such a profound impact on the animals that call the ocean home, one needs no more than to look at the video above to understand the consequences of our actions.
This seal was found with a stray net wrapped tightly around his neck. The initial sighting of this little guy is certainly gruesome, but when you think about the fact that over 700 marine species are in danger of extinction due to the plastic waste we throw into the ocean, his situation hardly seems extraordinary.
Luckily, this seal was saved thanks to the quick action of the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s marine rescue team and he was safely returned to the ocean. We can all take action to protect marine animals by reducing the amount of plastic we use and avoiding seafood. To learn more about how you can help the world’s marine animals, click here.
