Colorado Parks and wildlife were called to a neighborhood after it was reported that a moose calf was stuck in the foundation of a house.

The four-foot-deep foundation had been abandoned because of the east troublesome fireThe people who lived in the neighborhood had to try to rescue the moose calf by making a wooden ramp but had not had any luck.

The calf mother had stayed nearby and was pacing, coming to touch noses with her calf every few minutes.

Officer Rocksund was the wildlife official that showed up at the scene. He ended up tranquilizing both the calf and mother in order to perform a safe rescue. While tranquilized, the mother and baby moose were transported to a safer location – far away from humans where they could hopefully stay safe from human locations.

CPW Area Wildlife Manager Jeromy Huntington, said, “It’s a good reminder that folks need to fence off foundations and cover their window wells because animals can get trapped and die. We’ve had some increased reports of human-moose conflicts near Grand Lake since the East Troublesome Fire burn.”

Thankfully this story had a happy ending though it is just one incident of human moose interactions that have been increasing since 2020.
