The devastating situation in Ukraine is having a drastic effect on the nation’s zoos. There are three large zoos, including Nikolaev Zoo, Kyiv Zoological Park, and Kharkiv Zoo, in cities currently under attack by the Russian military. Staff at multiple nature reserves and zoos in the country, especially in the cities of Mariupol, Odessa, and Kyiv, are terrified their animals will die from starvation.

While some of the animals including lions, tigers, and wild cats have been rehomed in zoos in Poland, sadly this is not going to be possible for many species, leaving some behind to suffer and die. Although transporting animals seems like the best thing for them, it can be an incredibly risky endeavor and is very stressful and scary for the animals.  Many can even experience dehydration, fatigue, and unusual behavioral changes, a study shows.

Putin is hurting both people and animals. In total, more than 10,000 animals are in danger at zoos and reserves in Ukraine right now. These include rare and endangered species like polar bears, wolves, black leopards, and giraffes. Sign the petition to demand Putin and his military advisors end his campaign of terror in Ukraine and save the zoo animals!
