Petition: Ask Television and Radio Stations to Include Animal Alert Advisories During Severe Weather!

When weather reports are announced on television or radio broadcasts, people’s health is a top concern. They warn us to wear coats, scarves, and gloves. Or they’ll warn us to stay inside when the weather is too severe, be it a snowstorm or a heatwave. But what about our beloved pets? Many people do not think about this and leave their dogs to face the elements, assuming they can handle it. While some people leave dogs outside in all kinds of weather because of cruelty, some just do it because of ignorance.

That’s why we recently shared a petition demanding that it be made illegal to leave dogs tethered outside in severely cold weather. But petitioner Adam Parker has also started another petition proposing a great solution!

Some people think their dog will be find and can handle it, but even long-haired and thick-coated dogs that tend to be more cold tolerant are at risk in cold weather. As the American Veterinary Medical Association states: “Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It’s a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it’s untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather.”

That’s why Parker proposes that television and radio stations be required to include animal alert advisories during severe weather. This could be a notice across the screen reminding people to bring their dogs indoors or an announcement that warns people it’s too cold for the dogs to be left outside. Either way, it would be a great way to remind or inform people to think about their pets’ safety too, not just their own when getting ready for the day.

Animal lovers will always remember Bob Barker‘s “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered,” at the end of every The Price is Right episode. This solution would be a similar one. You can sign this petition advocating for a law that requires this. You could also contact your local television/radio stations, or even contact your representatives asking them to introduce a bill to protect pets during severe weather with solutions such as this one.
