Animals used in the tourism industry suffer immensely, but their suffering is fueled by the profits made from tourists who pay to see the animals. Behind the scenes of what the tourists see and may find “entertaining” is nothing but cruelty. Firstly, these animals belong in the wild. Secondly, performing such tricks is unnatural. They’re kept in cages and restricted and they are starved because food is their reward for doing what their captors force them to learn.

PETA Asia recently shared devastating footage of a monkey in a zoo in Phuket, Thailand named Ning Nong. He is four years old and he is kept in cages and paraded around on a restricted leash that chokes him. He’s forced to perform meaningless tricks like slam dunk a basketball, lift weights, push-ups, sit ups, and more.

PETA’s senior vice president of international campaigns, Jason Baker says: “Circus trainers break monkeys’ spirits using violent methods that rely on the fear of punishment. They force animals into a lifetime of slavery.” He also says the monkeys are “snatched from their mothers at birth” and “deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them.”

PETA shared the video to encourage people not to buy tickets to cruel shows like this. That is the best thing you can do when traveling, but also share this information and footage with other travelers so that they know what they’d be paying for if they see shows like this — the suffering of animals.

To stand up against such cruelty, sign this petition asking Thailand to free the chained and caged monkeys forced to perform for tourists like Ning Nong!
