The fashion industry is being turned upside down in the best way possible! The horrible, cruel reality of fur has come to light and there is no unseeing the truth. Undercover investigations by organizations like Humane Society International, One Voice, and Oikeutta Eläimille have lifted the curtain on what goes on behind the scenes at fur farms where the supply for “fashion” comes from. These investigations have found foxes and minks in tiny cages living in horrible conditions, led to depression, strange behaviors, death, and cannibalism amongst the animals. When the animals are going to be killed, they are dragged from their cages and electrocuted or killed in other gruesome ways.

These heartbreaking truths have led to positive change. Luxury brands Prada, Coach, and BCBG have all ditched fur! Recently, California also became the first state in the United States to ban fur. Now, in more amazing news, Macy’s Inc., parent company of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s have committed to ditching fur by the end of 2020!

Humane Society of the United States told One Green Planet: “This includes all Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s private brands, as well as items sold from brand partners. Fur will no longer be sold in Macy’s, Inc. off-price stores, including Macy’s Backstage and Bloomingdale’s The Outlet. As part of this commitment, the company will be closing its Fur Vaults and salons.”

Jeff Gennette, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s says they have been listening to consumer trends and demands, and they want to listen to their consumers. They partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to commit to this wonderful change. He also says. “We remain committed to providing great fashion and value to our customers, and we will continue to offer high-quality and fashionable faux fur alternatives.”

In light of this news, Humane Society International/UK is campaigning for a UK fur sales ban hoping that the news will encourage British icons Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Flannels to also go fur free. As HSI/UK Executive Director Claire Bass told One Green Planet: “Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are globally iconic names in  fashion retail so it’s really thrilling to see them following the global trend and ridding their stores of fur. By dropping fur, these department stores are making a clear statement that fur is gruesome not glamorous […] Most consumers agree that caging wild animals their whole lives only to be gassed or electrocuted and skinned for fashion is tasteless and outmoded, so it’s no wonder that we’re seeing some of the biggest names in retail and design are going fur-free.”

Macy’s is the largest department store in the United States with 900 stores in 44 states. Their commitment to ditching fur very inspiring and fills us with hope for more victories to come for animals. We’re also excited for the message it sends to the rest of the fashion industry, and we hope other stores and fashion brands continue to follow suit until the animals are no longer suffering!
