An animal shelter in Ohio is praising a man who immediately volunteered to save a trapped puppy who fell down a deep ravine.
The Ross County Humane Society got a call about an 8-week old mixed mutt that fell down an almost 100-foot ravine. The shelter went out to try to save the poor puppy, but they could not retrieve him alone.
That’s when the staff posted on social media asking any locals if they could help get the poor cold and muddy puppy out. Enter local veteran Joe Lawhorn, who is a friend of the shelter, saw the post and immediately went to the scene to help out. Lawhorn quickly went down the ravine and brought the puppy back up to safety, according to the shelter.
“This puppy, who we have named Kenda was transported to North Fork Animal Clinic by shelter staff to be examined and was released to the shelter.”
The puppy was a part of a litter that was supposed to be coming to the shelter anyways. The shelter director, Jenn Thomas, told Newsweek, “These puppies were actually supposed to be coming to us yesterday. We have a program where if owners have unplanned litters, we will take them for the families and spay/neuter their other dogs for free.”
“These puppies were to be part of that program. The owner called us to let us know that she had been unable to find one of the puppies so she went looking for it and could hear it crying down in the ravine.”
This was not a surprise to locals that Joe was the one who saved the puppy, and he even said this was his second puppy rescue this month. While he was on his rescue mission, his wife, who didn’t know he was already saving the pup, was sending screenshots of the shelter’s social media post and asking if he had any ideas of how to help.
“The puppies were all named in honor of Joe and his cycling sponsors Kenda, Rudy, Irwin, Marque and Fuji will be available for adoption in just a few days.”
According to the ASPCA, there are 6.3 million animals that enter shelters every year. Lawhorn has urged the public to consider adopting or fostering to help local shelters.
“If you can’t do either of them, please consider donating,” he said in his Facebook post.
