A couple in Georgia has received a citation after shopping at Walmart while holding a whitetail fawn like a puppy in their arms.

The state Game Warden, Saxon Campbell, thought that he had seen it all until he got a call from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office about two individuals who had brought their “pet” fawn deer to Walmart, according to a Georgia DNR Facebook post.

The Sherrif called Georgia’s DNR, and the wildlife officers were dispatched to Walmart, but the couple had already left the store. The officers found security camera footage and were able to track down the man that was wearing a company logo shirt for his business.

The man reportedly told the officers that his dogs had brought the fawn home, and that’s when they decided to take care of the fawn as a pet. However, it is unlawful to have wildlife as pets without a permit in the state of Georgia so the man was given a citation and the animal was confiscated and taken to a wildlife rehabilitator.

“This is a good time to remind everyone that just because you find a fawn “abandoned” by its mother, it most likely has just been left alone until she returns and should never be moved,” warned the Georgia DNR.

You should never touch or interact with a wild animal, no matter how cute they are! If you see an animal in need of help, call your local wildlife rehabilitator or officials to help.
