Behind the facade of neatly packaged duck meat lies a nightmarish realm of suffering and cruelty, perpetuated by the commercial duck farming industry. Recently, an investigation conducted at a Gressingham Foods farm in West Yorkshire unveiled a harrowing scene. In the sheds housing thousands of ducks, investigators from Animal Justice Project witnessed a catalog of horrors. Sick and injured ducks suffered as dead ducks were scattered on the floors.
The footage revealed a sadistic cycle of violence. Ducks, treated as mere commodities, were subjected to brutal handling methods. They were grabbed by their necks, strangled, thrown about, kicked, and crushed underfoot. Such treatment is not only morally reprehensible but also a clear violation of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
In the confines of these sheds, devoid of any open water sources, ducks were denied the necessities vital for their health and natural behavior. Desperate attempts to bathe in shallow drinkers left the ducks dirty.
The scale of industrial farming renders each duck a statistic, devoid of individuality or consideration for their welfare. Afflicted with infections, blindness, lameness, and other ailments, these birds suffer in silence, reduced to mere casualties of an exploitative system.
The rapid growth rates imposed on these ducks for commercial gain exacerbate their plight. Engineered to reach market weight within a mere 42 days, many succumb to the physical strain, their bodies unable to Support their own weight. Trapped on their backs for hours on end, they face a slow and agonizing demise, denied even the dignity of humane treatment.
As temperatures soar within the sheds, the distress of the ducks escalates. Panting to cool themselves, they endure unbearable conditions, their suffering compounded by the indifference of those who profit from their misery.
The final journey for these ducks ends at a slaughterhouse, where they meet a fate no less cruel than their lives. Electrified water baths and throat-slitting are hailed as ‘humane’ methods of slaughter, yet they belie the inherent brutality of the industry.
The disturbing reality of commercial duck farming demands urgent action. As consumers, we hold the power to effect change through our choices. By refusing to Support industries that prioritize profit over compassion, we can pave the way for an ethical future.
