Tarzan and Tanya: How These Lions Went From a Cruel Circus to a Happy Ending

Tarzan and Tanya ADI

Tanya and Tarzan endured seven whole years of hell in a cruel circus in Guatemala. These poor animals were confined to a small barren cage the size of a queen-sized bed, according to rescuers with Animal Defenders International (ADI).

Now, thanks to ADI the couple can remain forever inseparable in their forever home at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS), South Africa.

The ‘resident sweethearts’ suffered immense abuse during their time in the circus. Tarzan suffered horrific injuries when he was attacked by a tiger, and his lower lip was torn and hanging from his chin. Tanya still has scars on her face, ears, and back from trying to protect Tarzan during the attack.

To repair the damage, ADIWS gave Tarzan a partial lip-lift after he arrived which healed well and Tanya as well seems to approve, the organization says.

Jan Creamer, ADI President said, “The inspiring, heartwarming story of Tanya and Tarzan shows the incredible bond these lifelong companions share. A bond which helped get them through the darkest of times. Together, they can now enjoy the happiest chapter of their lives.”

Lions and other big cats are often exploited in circuses for entertainment purposes. The exploitation of lions in circuses typically involves capturing them from their natural habitats, removing them from their families, and forcing them to perform unnatural and often dangerous tricks in front of large crowds.

These animals are often subjected to cruel training methods, including physical abuse and the use of tools like whips, sticks, and electric prods, to make them perform as desired. They may also be deprived of food and water to make them more compliant.

In addition to the physical and emotional harm caused by the training process, lions in circuses are often forced to live in small, cramped cages or enclosures for extended periods of time, with little opportunity for exercise or stimulation. This can lead to a host of physical and mental health problems, including obesity, muscle atrophy, and depression.

We can help these animals by not supporting the businesses that exploit them. Refrain from buying tickets to circuses, zoos, or movies that use wild animals. This will leave these companies with less financial Support to keep their cruel practices going. We need to stand up for animals like Tarzan and Tanya and make sure they get the life they deserve!
