An early morning shooting in Prunedale, California, left around 100 farm animals dead and a community shaken. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire near Avery Lane around 3:25 a.m. Deputies arrived to hear hundreds of rounds being fired over several hours in a remote, heavily wooded area, making it difficult to locate the shooter.
A shelter-in-place order was issued as law enforcement worked to track down the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Vicente Joseph Arroyo. Using a drone, deputies found Arroyo in a crashed vehicle near a vineyard. He was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including animal cruelty and illegal firearm possession.
Among the dead were chickens, goats, rabbits, birds, and even a miniature horse. Some injured animals were transported to SPCA Monterey County but had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries. No humans were harmed in the incident and the threat to the public has been neutralized. Arroyo’s bail is set at $50,000 as the investigation continues.
