A heartwarming and hilarious video of a senior husky named Brenin, navigating his way home after a vet visit, has charmed internet users, racking up over 193,000 views. The footage, shared by his owner Sorcha Elspeth (@sorchaelspethtattoo), captures the 13-year-old dog’s struggle to return to his canal boat home, drawing comparisons to “that one drunk friend” who just can’t make it home without a few mishaps.
The viral clip, posted a day ago, shows Brenin slowly descending a set of stairs, dozing on a train, cautiously hopping off, and finally staggering along the canal side before boarding his floating home. Overlay text humorously likens Brenin’s journey to the antics of an inebriated companion, much to the amusement of viewers.
Elspeth, 30, from Scotland, explained to Newsweek that Brenin “was in another world” following the vet visit. Typically a 45-minute trip, this time it stretched to two hours. “He was walking incredibly slowly home, stumbling over his feet, falling asleep and having to be woken up, startling himself, getting overly interested in smells and staring at leaves,” she recounted.
Brenin’s sedation was necessary for an oral checkup and vaccination due to his sore mouth, making him reluctant to be examined. VCA hospitals note that it’s common for dogs to be drowsy or disoriented for 12 to 24 hours after anesthesia, explaining Brenin’s comical yet pitiable state.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) advises that while anesthesia-related deaths in dogs are rare, they do occur. Risks vary based on breed, size, age, and health condition. Certain breeds like greyhounds and bulldogs have specific sensitivities, and toy breeds are more prone to complications.
Senior dogs, like Brenin, face higher anesthesia risks due to age-related organ changes. However, Dr. Berit Fischer from the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia assures that “age is not a disease,” and healthy senior dogs without other ailments don’t face significantly greater risks than younger dogs.
Post-anesthesia recovery can take several days. Dogs may exhibit signs such as whining and difficulty regulating body temperature, necessitating a balance of warmth without overheating.
The TikTok video, posted on May 23, has garnered over 36,000 likes and nearly 100 comments. Elspeth herself humorously noted that Brenin “was seriously overestimating the jumps off tube/train.” One user commented, “He’s living in a temporary trippy world,” while another quipped, “I bet he’ll wake up with no idea how he got from the vets to home.”
Brenin’s endearing struggle highlights the sometimes challenging aftermath of veterinary visits for our pets, while also providing a touching reminder of the humorous and lovable quirks of our furry friends.
