Senior Dog Surrendered After Nine Years

Senior Dog with Graying Face

Diesel, a 10-year-old pitbull, finds himself in a heart-wrenching situation after spending nine years as a pet, only to be surrendered by his humans. Richard Adamonis, a volunteer at the West Milford Animal Shelter Society in New Jersey, shared Diesel’s story, revealing the dog’s initial fear and confusion upon arriving at the shelter three weeks ago.

Like millions of companion animals across the United States, Diesel represents a poignant reality highlighted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Often, these animals end up in shelters through no fault of their own, triggering a mix of emotions for volunteers like Adamonis. The decision to give up a lifelong pet can evoke anger and sadness, especially when the animal has done nothing wrong.

Despite the upheaval, Diesel has shown remarkable resilience, quickly adapting to his new environment. Described as calm and obedient by Adamonis, Diesel has endeared himself to shelter staff, who are determined to find him a loving home. The ASPCA reports that approximately 2 million dogs are adopted each year, offering hope for Diesel and others like him.

While Diesel gets along with other dogs, he would thrive best as the only pet in a household with children over the age of 10. Adamonis believes Diesel deserves a home where he can be the center of attention, receiving the love and care he yearns for after years of companionship.
