@julienashawaty Hearing your cat scream is the most heartbreaking noise in the world. When Luna started screaming like this we went to the vet to rule everything medical out and they said she’s healthy (minus stage two kidney disease), but this is what senior cat dementia looks like. She will get lost in our small apartment. She will yell. A LOT. Her memory isnt all there anymore, though we swear she knows exactly what time it is all day long. Give your senior cats extra comfort, extra love, extra patience for those 6am cat screaming sessions, and remember that one day youd give anything to hear these screams again. This is the sad side of growing older your babies.. but how lucky am I to be the one to hug her and always make sure she knows I’d climb to the moon to make her feel okay. 🥹❤️🩹 #cat #cats #seniorcatsoftiktok #dementia #catlover ♬ It Will Be Okay - Peanuds
A touching video of a pet parent comforting her nearly 18-year-old senior cat, Luna, has melted the hearts of TikTok viewers. Posted by Julie Nashawaty, known as Auntie Julie – The Pet Sitter (@julienashawaty), the clip has garnered over 1.6 million views since it was uploaded in late September.
In the video, Luna, who turns 18 this December, shows signs of cognitive decline—a common issue among aging pets. The Boston-based parent explains how Luna often becomes disoriented and meows loudly, a symptom that has worsened with age. Nashawaty describes moments when Luna appears lost, especially during the night, and how her gentle reassurances help calm the elderly cat.
Senior cats like Luna, who are over 14 years old, are considered “geriatric,” comparable to humans aged 76-100. According to veterinarians, these older cats often experience cognitive dysfunction, similar to dementia in humans, resulting in confusion, disorientation, and changes in behavior.
While there is no cure for cat dementia, Nashawaty has found that keeping Luna on a consistent routine has helped. Her video highlights the importance of giving senior pets extra patience and love, especially when they display distressing symptoms like frequent meowing. The video has prompted an outpouring of Support from TikTok users, who praised Nashawaty for her dedication to Luna’s care. It received 1.7 million views and over 200,000 likes.
