Scared Dog Learns to Trust Shelter Worker in Viral Video

Scruffy shelter dog looks out from behind wire crate door.

Dogs can end up at a shelter for many different reasons. However, often, they have already undergone heartbreaking hardships in their lives. Additionally, the loud and chaotic shelter environment can be stressful for dogs who are already experiencing significant upheaval. They may respond by becoming scared and withdrawn. Sadly, this can significantly reduce their chances for adoption.

One dog who struggled to adapt to shelter life is Tomato. Not much is known about Tomato’s life before he came to the KC Pet Project. The brown dog was picked up as a stray

In a video shared to the TikTok account @katie.and.the.snoots, Tomato can be seen shyly curled in a corner of his kennel when a shelter worker comes in to spend some time with him. However, slowly, and with the help of some treats, Tomato sees that he can trust this human. Eventually, he even allows her to pet him. The video of Tomato’s breakthrough received over 20,000 likes on TikTok.

Tomato is looking for a patient home, preferably with another dog to help him adjust. Although he is shy, with people who are willing to give him time, he will blossom.
