A beloved black bear in South Lake Tahoe — known locally as Hope — is facing euthanasia after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife allegedly deemed her too “habituated” to humans. But locals say this gentle mother, who has shown no aggression toward people, is only trying to survive in a rapidly shrinking habitat. They’re demanding non-lethal solutions like relocation, electric fencing, and community education instead of death.

Hope, also called “bear number 753,” has been spotted looking for food in unlocked homes — a direct result of human encroachment. Her cub, Bounce, will be left alone if officials go through with this plan. Killing her won’t solve anything — it just punishes wildlife for human negligence. Tahoe residents are urging compassion and coexistence.
