A Chihuahua was found abandoned in a carrier that was tied to the front door of the Oklahoma Humane Society over the Fourth of July weekend. No information was left with the dog. During this time, temperatures across the country soared to record-breaking levels. It is unknown who abandoned the Chihuahua or why. Luckily, the little dog was found by the staff and was taken inside to recuperate.
In photos shared by the Oklahoma Humane Society, the small dog can be seen hanging in a carrier attached to the doors of the rescue. Signs which show the shelter’s hours are clearly visible next to the precariously dangling pup. “Sorry, we’re closed,” one reads. There was no owner present when staff found the dog, and no reason was provided for his abandonment. Temperatures in Oklahoma City, where the dog was found, reached highs of 93 degrees over the holiday. The Humane Society’s staff do not know how long the dog was left outside. Heat can quickly prove deadly to dogs. Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat. Instead, they regulate their body temperature by panting. Dogs should always be given access to shelter, shade, and cool clean water during warmer times. Sadly, it does not look like the Chihuahua was even left with access to water.
Fortunately for the abandoned Chihuahua, staff found the dog and brought him inside. There he was able to rest and recover from his ordeal. He is doing well according to the Oklahoma Humane Society Staff. However, the Oklahoma Humane Society is not a shelter and does not have facilities to house animals long-term. They rely on fosters to provide temporary housing to animals while they wait for adoption. Additionally, an outbreak of Canine Influenza has further derailed the shelter’s ability to accept animals. Nearby shelters are experiencing similar outbreaks. In light of this, the Oklahoma Humane Society is relying heavily on community members and pet foster parents. They are asking community members to consider fostering an animal if possible.
