These GoPro underwater videos have been popping up a lot lately. I know it’s a high definition camera, but something about these videos seems unreal. Maybe there’s some kind of color correction going on, but one thing’s for sure — the featured animals and their behaviors are genuine, and just as magical as they appear on camera.
This video takes place in the lovely Jellyfish Lake located in the Pacific island of Palau, the only place in the world where people can swim along with jellyfish. My mom always told me not to touch the jellyfish at the shore because I would get stung, but the jellyfish in this specific lake have no predators, so they’ve lost that defense.
According to photographer Kevin Davidson, who runs a camera shop in Palau, “‘The jellyfish have evolved into their own subspecies and have slowly lost their stinging cells, some snorkelers may feel a slight sting on more tender parts of the skin, but they’re harmless.”
So that explains it. If you’ve ever longed to touch those soft, pillowy jellyfish at the beach, I guess this is the place to do it!
