The Zama Shrine near Tokyo is gaining popularity for extending its blessings beyond humans to include beloved pets. Natsuki Aoki recently made a special journey from Hiroshima to Tokyo with her two Chihuahua dogs, seeking the unique blessings offered at the Zama Shrine.

The Zama Shrine, with roots tracing back to the 6th century, is located approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. While primarily known for its historical significance, the religious center has embraced modernity by establishing a designated prayer area for animals in 2012. This area now plays host to the Shichi-Go-San ceremonies, traditionally celebrated in mid-November for children reaching the ages of three, five, and seven.

Aoki expressed her appreciation for such inclusive practices, emphasizing that few religious centers worldwide open their doors to animals. “I think it would be great to see more places like this,” she remarked, reflecting the sentiment of many pet owners who consider their furry companions as integral members of their families.

On a recent Tuesday, the Inuneko Jinja, or Dog-Cat Shrine, witnessed a heartwarming scene as several individuals led their pets up its steps. The pet owners, donning a spectrum of emotions, prayed for the health and happiness of their dogs and cats, receiving blessings from Shinto clergy members.

Yoshinori Hiraga of the Zama Shrine acknowledged the changing dynamics of family structures, noting, “The number of children is decreasing each year, and as a result, more and more people are pouring their love into their dogs and cats.” This shift in focus towards pets is evident in the increasing attendance at the Shichi-Go-San ceremonies for animals.

The clergy at Zama Shrine aims to provide a meaningful space for pet parents to express their gratitude when their dogs and cats reach the significant ages of three, five, and seven. Hiraga estimated that around 120 pets would receive blessings at the shrine during the current season.
