Astaptsova shared Joey’s emotional rollercoaster on her TikTok account, @joey_how_u_doinn, in a video that quickly went viral. With more than 1.2 million views and over 186,000 likes, the clip showcases the touching moment Joey learns he’s not being left behind after all.

The video begins with Joey looking utterly dejected as his humans prepare to leave for a party. The caption reads, “Joey thinks he is not coming,” and the camera pans to Joey lying on the floor, exuding sadness with his soulful eyes. Despite Astaptsova’s reassurances, Joey remains immobile, clearly convinced he’s being left out of the fun.

However, the moment Astaptsova tells him, “Joey, you’re coming with us. Yes, we’re going to a party!” his demeanor changes instantly. At the word “Come,” Joey springs up, his face lighting up with joy, tail wagging furiously. He bounds to the door, stretching and giving a playful growl, ready for the adventure.

“Joey can be a bit dramatic,” Astaptsova, 31, told Newsweek. “We work from home and take him everywhere most of the time, so it is unacceptable for him when we leave him alone to go out. He makes sure we know he doesn’t like it by giving us a grumpy or sad look.”

The video resonated with viewers, with many commenting on the Golden Retriever’s adorable reaction. One user remarked, “We don’t deserve dogs,” while another quipped about their own pet’s similar behavior, “My Golden Retriever does this when I go to put the bins out.”

Wendy Hauser, a special adviser at the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, explained to Newsweek that dogs’ reactions to being left alone vary widely. Factors such as the dog’s age, breed, and activity level play significant roles. “Some working dogs, like Belgian Malinois or border collies, need jobs to do and can become destructive when left alone for long periods. Other dogs, like basset hounds and mastiffs, are usually content to wait for their owners to come home,” Hauser said.

Astaptsova and Narendranath have built a community of friends who adore Joey, with several adopting their own retrievers. This particular outing was to a housewarming party for a friend’s retriever named Odin. “Every time we meet our group of friends, dogs are welcome; this one was a housewarming party of Odin’s parents, so the dogs had a great time,” Astaptsova shared.

Following the initial video, Astaptsova posted additional footage of the party, showing Joey happily reunited with his retriever friends, taking over the house and garden.

Joey’s story highlights the deep bond between pets and their humans and serves as a reminder of the joy and companionship dogs bring into our lives. His viral moment of elation upon learning he was included in the family plans resonated with viewers worldwide, reminding us all of the simple yet profound joy of being together.
