In Cumberland County court on Tuesday, Jason Turner, a 24-year-old former worker at turkey farms in Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty. As part of his sentencing, Turner received probation and is prohibited from working in any job that involves the care of animals.
The case against Turner is part of a larger investigation that began in 2021, leading to charges against 12 former workers from Plainville Farms. These workers faced a total of 141 counts of animal cruelty. The accusations include acts of kicking, stomping, and beating turkeys at seven farms across Chester, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Perry, and Union counties. Many of the turkeys were reported to be sick, injured, or unable to walk.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An undercover PETA investigator joined a Plainville Farms crew for approximately three weeks and captured video evidence of the alleged mistreatment of the birds. This footage played a crucial role in the subsequent charges and court proceedings.
