Just like humans, dogs can develop dementia as they age. In dogs, this condition is known as Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. Recently, one TikTok user shared a heartbreaking video showing some of the ways that dementia affects dogs.

Sasha has lived with her humans since she was a puppy. One of five dogs, she is described by her humans as a sweetheart who took on a motherly role for the other canines. However, after the death of one of her canine siblings, Sasha began to display some concerning symptoms. She was diagnosed with dog dementia by a vet in 2022.
The TikTok video shows some ways that dementia affects Sasha. She is seen sleeping excessively, forgetting to eat, pacing, becoming disoriented, and forgetting how to move backward.
Eventually, Sasha began refusing to eat or drink. Ultimately, her quality of life deteriorated to the point that her humans felt forced to euthanize her and spare her further suffering. However, they continue to miss her every day.
Although there is no treatment for dementia in dogs, supplements may be able to help prevent it. Additionally, there are ways that humans can help slow the effects of doggie dementia and make canines suffering from the disease more comfortable. If a dog displays any signs of developing dementia, it is important to seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.
