Just like humans, each dog is different and has a unique personality. Some dogs are naturally rambunctious and playful, while others are more relaxed and dignified. Sudden, severe changes in behavior are often indicators that a dog is sick or injured. However, unlike humans, dogs cannot speak to tell us when they are not feeling well. While most humans can tell when their beloved animal companion is suffering, a veterinarian shares a few signs that are dead giveaways that something is wrong.
A lack of energy is often the first sign that a dog is under the weather. This not only refers to sleeping an excessive amount but also to a lack of interest in activities that they usually enjoy such as fetch or their evening walk. When a dog is sick, it is best to let them rest as much as possible so that they can recuperate.
Excessive sleeping goes hand in hand with lack of energy. When a dog feels under the weather, they may attempt to sleep off their ailment (just like a human with the flu). It should be noted that puppies and older dogs naturally require more sleep than spry young dogs.
Another symptom to watch out for is vomiting or loss of appetite. For many dogs, one of the best parts of the day is mealtime. If a normally voracious dog is skipping meals, their human may want to keep an eye on them. Additionally, if a dog is not drinking water, that is a cause for extra concern. Dogs can quickly become dehydrated. Other symptoms of stomach upset such as vomiting and diarrhea should also be monitored closely.
Ultimately, if a dog displays these symptoms, their human should monitor them closely. Usually, they will recover after being allowed to rest. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, always seek veterinary treatment.
