Chihuahua Mix Rescued from Canal Finds Home

A 10-year-old chihuahua mix named Dorothea has defied the odds after a harrowing rescue from an overturned shopping cart in an Arizona canal. The senior dog was discovered struggling to stay afloat on June 16, prompting a swift response from the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) and the Phoenix Fire Department.

A passerby spotted Dorothea stranded in the canal and alerted authorities. Emergency Animal Medical Technician (EAMT) Hunter Stribling, along with firefighters, quickly devised a plan using ladders and rescue equipment to bring the frightened pup to safety. Once on dry land, Dorothea showed her gratitude to her rescuers.

Following the rescue, Dorothea received medical attention for dehydration, hunger, ticks, and some dental issues, including fractured teeth. Despite her challenging start, she soon thrived in the care of AHS staff, enjoying pampering and attention at their shelter.

Senior dogs often face difficulties in finding adoptive homes, but Dorothea was one of the lucky ones. After a month at the shelter, she was adopted by a loving family in Youngtown, Arizona. This miraculous turnaround proves that even in the most dire circumstances, hope can shine through!
