After One Year of Foster Care, Stressed Dog is Sent Back to Shelter

Mako, a 9-year-old Pitbull mix, has captured hearts across social media after being returned to a shelter for the third time. His foster family could no longer care for him, leaving Mako back at Austin Pets Alive! and in need of a permanent home.

Mako, previously the Austin FC Honorary Mascot of the Match in March 2024, struggles with kennel life, often becoming stressed and self-harming. Luis Sanchez from Austin Pets Alive! explains that Mako’s previous foster had to return him due to a family emergency, and now he urgently needs a new foster or adoptive home.

Described as well-trained and affectionate, Mako loves meeting new people and enjoys simple pleasures like having his back scratched. His foster, Lotta, shared that he knows commands like sit, shake, and lay down, often offering his paw for treats. Though he is mostly laid-back, Mako still enjoys playing with his toys.

Despite his gentle nature, Mako requires a home without other pets. The shelter is hopeful that his viral TikTok video, which has amassed over 171,600 views, will help find him a loving family.

The Humane Society of Macomb notes that common reasons for dog surrenders include age, allergies, and moving, making Mako’s story all too familiar. However, with his sweet personality, Mako’s chances of finding a forever home remain bright.
