Authorities in Beltrami County, Minnesota, are investigating a shocking case of animal mistreatment resulting in over 170 animals left unaccounted for. The investigation began in October when deputies received a tip about potential neglect at a property near Hines.
When officers first visited the site on October 21, they found concerns related to inadequate food, water, and medical care, as well as unsanitary conditions with a significant buildup of animal waste. After further visits, including a search warrant on October 29, officials discovered over 200 cats and 50 dogs on the property. Despite multiple warnings, the situation had not improved by November 12.
A subsequent rescue operation led by the sheriff’s office and the Animal Humane Society resulted in the recovery of 30 cats and 34 dogs. However, about 170 animals remain unaccounted for. Investigators found an ash pile containing numerous bone fragments, raising grim questions about their fate.
Dr. Graham Brayshaw, who assisted during the rescue, called it the worst case of animal neglect he had encountered. “They didn’t have adequate food, water, shelter, medical care from the situations they were living in. Many of them had respiratory disease, other illnesses that weren’t being treated,” he said.
Many animals are now under care, with some showing severe signs of malnourishment and illness. Lizzie Carr, a behavior specialist with the Animal Humane Society, said rehabilitation could take months for some animals, but others might soon be ready for adoption. “It’s very rewarding to take these animals out of those situations, be the ones who work with them every day and eventually get to see them go into new homes,” she noted.
Douglas Erickson and Debra Marshall, the property’s owners, face 10 counts each of felony animal mistreatment. If convicted, they could serve up to 20 years in prison. Their next court appearance is scheduled for December 30.
