5 Easy Twists On The Classic Banana Soft Serve

Chances are that if you’re health-conscious, fruit-obsessed or simply a sweet tooth in search of a quick dessert, you’ve heard about banana soft serve.  Why, it’s summertime in the northern hemisphere, so for all we know you’re eating some right now!

At its most basic, banana soft serve is what happens when you take a few perfectly-ripe frozen bananas, throw them in a food processor, and then let the processor run for 3-5 minutes (scraping down the sides a few times for good measure) until your chunks of banana have turned into light, fluffy, smooth, creamy and addictive “ice cream”. Trying banana soft serve for the first time often leads to exclamations of astonishment accompanied by murmurs of delight, with licking of the bowl (not the food processor; those blades are sharp!) not uncommon.

Sure, the classic banana soft serve is sweet and refreshing in all its pure glory, but what about those nights when you want something a little more exciting? Try these 5 easy twists on the classic banana soft serve, and you’ll never look at fruit the same way again.

1. Pina Colada Banana Soft Serve

  • 2 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
  • ½ cup chopped pineapple, preferably frozen
  • 3 tablespoons thick coconut cream
  • toasted coconut flakes, to serve

Process the banana, pineapple, and coconut cream in a food processor for 3 – 5 minutes, depending on the strength of your food processor, until a soft serve consistency is reached. Garnish with toasted coconut flakes.

2. Vegan Magic Shell Banana Soft Serve with Sprinkles

  • 3 oz vegan dark chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
  • vegan rainbow sprinkles, to serve

Heat the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave or small saucepan until melted. Process the banana in a food processor for 3 – 5 minutes, depending on the strength of your food processor, until a soft serve consistency is reached. Drizzle over the melted chocolate sauce — it will harden up just like Magic Shell! — then top with rainbow sprinkles. Store the leftover chocolate sauce in the fridge, reheating before serving.

3. Cherry Garcia Banana Soft Serve     

  • 2 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
  • ½ cup pitted cherries, fresh or frozen
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons mini dark chocolate chips

Process the banana, cherries, and vanilla for 3 – 5 minutes, depending on the strength of your food processor, until a soft serve consistency is reached. Quickly pulse in the mini chocolate chips, then serve.

4. Mocha Banana Soft Serve

  • 2 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
  • 2 tablespoon brewed espresso or strong instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Process all ingredients in a food processor for 3 – 5 minutes, depending on the strength of your food processor, until a soft serve consistency is reached. Serve with vegan biscotti, if desired.

5. The Elvis Soft Serve

  • 2 peeled, sliced, and frozen bananas
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vegan bacon bits, such as Wayfare Pig Out Bacony Bits

Process the banana, peanut butter, and maple syrup in a food processor for 3 – 5 minutes, depending on the strength of your food processor, until a soft serve consistency is reached. Quickly pulse in the vegan bacon bits, then serve. We’re all shook up!
