When Thomas Neil Rodriguez adopted an eight-week-old puppy from a New York City shelter, he had no way of knowing that 16 years later he’d be capping off their time together with a whirlwind adventure.

Noticing that Poh seemed to not be feeling very well earlier in the year, veterinarians told Rodriguez that the elderly dog was suffering from a variety of age-related ailments including multiple tumors and kidney failure. He wasn’t given long to live.

“They were like, we can’t tell you [how much time he has left] but you could have days. He could be gone any day,” Rodriguez, a professional DJ said. Given that he had a gig coming up in Arizona shortly after the terminal diagnosis was handed down, he was torn. “I did not want to leave my dog knowing that he could go at any moment.”

And so, he didn’t. Packing up Poh, his fiancé and all of the belongings they would need, Rodriguez set out to take Poh on a tour of the United States. Visiting 35 cities (with Rodriguez dutifully treating Poh for his medical ailments all along the way), the pair got to spend the kind of time together that many who share their lives with a beloved pet wish that they could – as evidenced by the outpouring of love and Support the duo got on the Instagram account they started to document the trip.

“He loved it, it was so healing for him. It was like he was five years younger. He was walking with a lot of energy,” Rodriguez said.

Be it the trip, a strong will, Rodriquez’s diligent care or all of the above, Poh has managed to defy the odds given to him before the trip and is still around and wagging three months later. The duo continue to see the sights in their native New York, where there’s no shortage of things to experience, spending as much quality time together as they can.

“I am super blessed that I have actually gotten to do this,” he said. “People think I take care of Poh, but Poh takes care of me.”

  1. Yeah….no. Aside from a short trip to the local beach (if it was in early morning and cool out), this was not really such a brilliant idea. Riding in a car is exhausting for terminally ill animals, they have to constantly shift and balance, and getting them in and out of the car produces anxiety and even struggling. This is more of a stunt to get photos that stupid people think are so clever. It\’s not really such a hot idea to pack up a terminally ill dog and drive him all over the country. The dog doesn\’t get anything out of the Washington or Lincoln monuments. I think y\’alls have lost your minds if you think this is something to do with the terminally ill dog. If a dog is terminally ill don\’t go foisting all your selfishness and attention seeking and dramatics on the poor animal. Let him be in a familiar place and rest peacefully. You should have toured America with the dog when he was young….and thought about him more (make the trip be to places a dog can enjoy, like hiking trails and other activities that dogs enjoy).

    1. At first I also thought it was a wonderful story but after reading what Frank had to say, I have to agree with him. Maybe take your furbaby to places where you shared wonderful times and great memories but closer to home. Places which are familiar to him/her while keeping her as comfortable as possible. Whatever one chooses to do, it is one hell of a time when one knows that your furbaby is going away for good. Absolutely heartbreaking!

    2. Yeah… no. Let\’s just leave the guy\’s dog rotting away in a corner. What a more proper and appropriate way for it to die.

First off, you don\’t know what the dog gets out of it. Maybe it\’s excited to see lots of people and lights and colors.

Secondly, if the dog is going to die anyway, so what\’s the difference if it dies at home or on the road with its master?

You sound like the selfish one.
