The term “lab animals” often conjures up images of white rabbits and mice or rats. While most people might not know the specifics of what animals are used for in experiments, they are somehow comfortable with knowing these rodents are subjected to life in a lab. Well, we could only wish that these animals were ever only tasked with completing mazes in exchange for cheese, but sadly this isn’t the case. There are over 100 million animals subjected to painful cosmetic and pharmaceutical tests in the U.S. every year. If that came as a shock, what if we told you that a portion of those animals aren’t rats or rabbits, but dogs? Pretty crazy right?

Well, unfortunately, this is reality. According to the American Anti-Vivisection Society, between 70,000 and 75,000 dogs are used for research in the United States each year. The majority of these are beagles. We typically think of dogs as beloved companions and even family members, not “test subjects,” but these animals are used for pharmaceutical testing nonetheless.

Beagles are a favorite of testing facilities for their docile and trusting nature. Researchers often have the dogs’  voice boxes removed to prevent the animals from barking. Despite their loving and trusting nature, beagles are treated like little more than commodities, relegated to a concrete cage.

To help draw attention to the plight of beagles in labs, Beagle Freedom Project shared this telling image on Facebook.

It’s a bit hard to imagine that anyone could treat a dog like this, isn’t it? But then again, why is it that we accept rats and rabbits being used for testing yet are repulsed by this? The fact is, consumers are completely shielded from what has to happen to make many of the products they buy possible. After all, if they really knew that rabbits were being kept in tight restraints to have corrosive acids dropped in their eyes or rats were force-fed chemicals to see the toxicity threshold, would we support any animal testing? Probably not.  Add in the fact that animal testing has been proven to be highly ineffective and inaccurate, and it just seems like cruel and unusual torture.

Luckily, we can all help create a better world for animals by educating ourselves on the issues and voting for more advanced and humane science with our dollars. Alternative technologies do exist and many companies have decided to remove animals from their testing process altogether. As consumers, we can work to end this cruel practice by looking for products that have a “cruelty-free” label, which signifies products were made without the use of animal tests. The more interest consumers show in cruelty-free products, the more likely that brands and companies will opt to create items that do not involve this outdated practice.

You can also support Beagle Freedom Project, an organization working to reform testing legislation and rehome animals after their lab trials have ended. To learn more, click here.

No animal should have to suffer when we have all the tools to do better.

OKAY, ONEGREENPLANET HOW DO YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF TESTING DRUGS AND OTHER CHEMICALS??? I SEE WHERE YOU HAVE NO ANSWERS AS USUAL!!!! If animals weren\'t used for testing, the only way to get drugs approved would be to test them on humans. Do you REALLY think that if those tests go awry the subjects will not hesitate to sue the drug companies????? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA AT ALL WHAT THAT WILL DO TO DRUG PRICES WHICH ARE ALREADY AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH LEVEL?????

HERE\'S A THOUGHT. NONE OF THE ONEGREENPLANET STAFFERS ARE TO USE ANY TYPE OF DRUG OR COSMETIC OR CHEMICAL MIXTURE IN THEIR LIVES. LET\'S SEE HOW THAT GOES FOR YOU. THEN YOU CAN REPORT ON IT WITH PERSONAL EXPERIENCES HOW IT WAS TO LIVE A LIFE WITHOUT ALL THOSE USEFUL CONCOCTIONS THAT YOU AND OTHERS USE. I\'D LOVE TO SEE THAT!!!!

COME UP WITH A BETTER SOLUTION INSTEAD OF RUNNING YOUR PROPAGANDA THAT YOU HAVE NO FACTS FOR TO GET PEOPLE TO LIVE YOUR WAY OR QUIT YOUR BITCHING!

CL Smith,

Why are you so angry? Do you engage in this type of testing on animals, as a part of your job? Slow down a bit, and reread the article slowly. But first, spend a minute or two looking at this picture of these dogs. Does this picture affect you in any way? If not, I would like to suggest that you spend more time looking at it. But here is a fact for you: What they are breathing in is detrimental to their health.

Also, since you asked, the problem is being partially solved with alternative technologies and the removal of animals from testing (there are links embedded in the article). Another solution implied in the article is one of supply and demand: If consumers do their best to purchase products that are untested on animals, then demand will go down, sales will go down, and the product will no longer be manufactured, or the manufacturer would cease testing on animals (and make some public statement about it) to drive profits back up (or at least this is the idea).

Also, CL Smith, as far as getting ‘drugs approved’, the solution here could be one of reworking the standards and policies of the Food and Drug Administration. This is a huge undertaking that you and I could never productively hash out in the comments section of a blog, because (it’s safe to assume) neither you nor I have the requisite understanding of the topic.

Finally, CL Smith, there are quite a lot of people who strive to live a life as consumers who purchase NO animal products nor products that have been tested on animals. We call these people vegans.

I wish you the best, as you continue to discover your compassion for animals.

So you don\'t use any type of drugs, cosmetics, soaps, cleaning chemicals, etc. in your life. You can say you have never encouraged the research on these animal by doing so? What about soap and shaving cream? Use those? Shampoo? All those are tested on animals first for the most part. What about aspirin and other OTC pain killers? Germicide when you get an boo-boo? Cough medicine? Antihistimines? High blood pressure meds? Any other drugs?????

Yes?

Well, you must be at the top of the list for hell since you\'ve encouraged testing all those chemicals YOU USE on animals!!!!

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO ABOUT IT?????

John,
The larger problem here is industry, and institutions that fund this research.

I SAID IT MANY TIME AND I\'M SAYING IT AGAIN: DO RESEARCHES ON MURDERERS, RAPISTS, ETC., NOT ON INNOCENT ANIMALS! WHY WE PAY BIG RAXES AND FEED THOSE PEOPLE IN PRISONS? AT LEAST THEY CAN BE OF HELP!

COME UP WITH A REASONABLE SOLUTION INSTEAD OF DAMNING PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO DO THIS SORT OF RESEARCH. Because if testing isn\'t done using animals, there won\'t be any drugs around to save your sorry lives!!!!!

I want each and every "researcher" and all the people funding this crap to have the same done to them. Don\'t worry, when the experiment is over and IF you survive, we\'ll kill you (humanely of course)

I will never understand how a researcher can engage in this type of work. But I think a big part of the problem is the education system that trains researchers. The problem is institutional -- the researchers need to make a living, although I still do not forgive the work that they do.

And you NEVER use any drugs or make-up or perfumes or soap or cleaning solutions--and you never buy any of those things. So you have a VERY clear conscience. Must be nice to be so holier than thou.

Do you know what would happen if this wasn\'t done? Drug companies wouldn\'t be able to test drugs at all because people would always sue them if the drugs that are being tested on them did something really bad to them. Where would you be then if you get cancer and there\'s no medicine around to treat you with? Where would you be if your diabetes couldn\'t be controlled? Where would you be if your kid didn\'t have vaccines available to him to prevent diseases or cure a really bad infection? Hmmmmmm?????

Come up with a more reasonable solution and I will salute you myself.

Shame on the people who work at these "hell holes". Animals are trusting, and you all abuse, torture and kill them once their use is up. Absolutely disgusting!! Go find a real job, and stop living off the misery of these helpless dogs! What a horrible life :(

Why not identify the animal abusers in this and other photos? People who work in research facilities performing these kinds of barbaric tests on animals are no different than the neighborhood psychopaths out there intentionally torturing animals in their basement. Identify these people so their friends, families and the rest of the world knows who they are.
