Coconuts are one of our favorite tropical fruits. They are delicious and filled with nutritional benefits, and as an extra bonus, coconut products can be used for skin and hair care. This is great news considering many conventional personal care products contain toxins that can be harmful to one’s health. Plus, often times, the prices are not easy on the pocketbook. If you’re looking for a healthy and cost-effective way to replace some of your conventional brand skin and hair care products, coconut is a simple but honest answer. Try these solutions for many of your skin and hair care needs, and your skin, hair, and bank account will thank you!

Lotion

Coconut oil is perfect for moisturizing your skin. Simply lather it on your body generously and give the oil a bit of time to soak in before covering your skin with clothing. If you use coconut oil on your face, be sure to use only a very thin coat, as it may clog up your pores.

Body Scrub

Why spend money on expensive body scrubs when you can easily make your own with just a few ingredients? Mixed with sugar or Epsom Salt, coconut oil is a great addition to your body scrub! It moisturizes your skin while the sugar or Epsom Salt exfoliates, creating soft, smooth and healthy skin. Apply the body scrub to your skin in the shower, rubbing it gently against your skin to let the scrub exfoliate and moisturize. Try this Zesty Sweet Lemon Sugar Body Scrub.

Hair Conditioner

Coconut oil can also be a great substitute for conventional hair conditioner. In the same way it moisturizes your skin, coconut oil can moisturize your hair. It is also a great remedy for frizzy or tangled hair! When in the shower, simply apply some coconut oil to your hair and run your fingers through, until your hair is tangle-free and moisturized. Then, you may either rinse your hair thoroughly or leave the coconut oil in for a day as a deep conditioner. If you choose to leave the coconut oil in your hair, be sure to rinse it thoroughly when you shower next.

Massage Oil

Heated coconut oil can make for a wonderful massage oil. Yet again, coconut oil serves as a fabulous moisturizer and as an added bonus, the scent of coconut is very soothing, making it perfect for a relaxing massage. Simply heat as much oil as you need in the microwave until it is warm or hot and massage it into your skin.

Sunscreen

For short periods in the sun, coconut oil can even be used as an all-natural sunscreen. The U.S. National Library of Medicine explains that when applied to the skin, coconut oil actually blocks out 20 percent of UV rays.

Coconut Milk Face Mask

Coconut oil isn’t the only coconut product that will benefit your skin. Coconut milk can be a great addition to face masks, as it is full of nutrients and serves as a thick liquid base. You may mix it with oatmeal and banana or avocado for a refreshing face mask.

Bath Oil

For a relaxing bath, simply add some coconut oil. The sweet smell and the feeling of the oil in the water will give you a nice, tension-free soak.

Eye Makeup Remover

Do you need a chemical-free makeup remover? Yet again, coconut oil can be used instead. Simply add some coconut oil to a washcloth and dab around the eyes, rinsing afterward.

But...if you precondition your hair with coconut oil, be ready to pay the plumber dearly. It cools and sticks in your pipes, creating a nasty, thick sludge that no longer smells good!
