Salata Baladia (Tomato & Onion Tahini Salad) [Vegan]

A satisfying, creamy salad that is often made in our village in Palestine for its simplicity and deliciousness. It pairs beautifully with proteins or on its own with some rice.   Credit: Reprinted with permission from Dine in Palestine by Heifa Odeh. Page Street Publishing Co. 2022. Photo credit: Doaa Elkady.

How to Prepare Salata Baladia (Tomato & Onion Tahini Salad) [Vegan]

    1. In a bowl, combine the tahini, lemon juice and water, and mix together until a dressing-like consistency is reached. If desired, thin the dressing more by adding a teaspoon of water at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
    2. Toss the jalapeño, tomatoes and onion with the dressing and season the salad with salt. This is best enjoyed cold after sitting in the refrigerator, covered, for 1 hour so all the flavors come together. I’ve enjoyed this salad on falafel sandwiches and with a Kufta Tart; it is super delicious.
