Ingredients You Need for Creamed Pearl Onions [Vegan]

  • 3 1o-ounce bags of pearl onions, preferably pre-peeled
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, coconut oil, or vegan butter
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup vegan sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves
  • 2 teaspoons fresh parsley, plus more for garnish
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

How to Prepare Creamed Pearl Onions [Vegan]

  1. If your pearled onions are pre-peeled, boil a pot of water, slice off the very ends of each onions, blanch in the boiling water for 40 seconds, then transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. The peels should come off very easily.
  2. In a large pan, on medium heat, heat your oil, or vegan butter. Add in your onions and let cook until they have browned a bit.
  3. Pour in vegetable broth, sour cream, and add your fresh herbs, salt, and pepper.
  4. Simmer on low until the cream sauce has thickened up.
  5. Garnish with fresh parsley. Serve.

  1. It\’s frustrating to read a vegan recipe that calls for a product that must replace a standard ingredient – in this case, sour cream. A good vegan recipe should not rely on items like "vegan" butter, mayo, parmesan cheese, etc.; rather, if the dish requires some sort of dairy-like ingredient, then show how it is made instead of buying some sort of vegan replacement.
