Due to a possible Salmonella contamination, Associated Milk Producers are recalling dried whey powder that was manufactured at their Blair, Wisconsin plant. Sources say that this may be the reason that products from Campbell Soup Co., Flower Foods, and Mondelez International were recalled.
The company explains that because “additional product tested positive for Salmonella under A.M.P.I’s routine test and hold procedures, the company is recalling product as a precautionary measure. A.M.P.I. has ceased production at its Blair, Wisconsin dry whey plant, and is currently investigating the cause for the positive samples, and will take all necessary remedial actions.”
Because of their partnership with Pinnacle Foods, Inc., products in their Hungry Man line are being recalled because they contain the potentially contaminated ingredient, whey. Campbell Soup Co. has also recalled over 3.3 million units of Pepperidge Goldfish crackers because they contain whey as well.
Instead of consuming whey protein that’s derived from milk products, there are alternative forms of plant-based proteins on the market! Some options include seitan, tofu, tempeh, lentils, chickpeas and all other legumes, hemp seeds, and quinoa!
There are many advantages of choosing plant-based protein in lieu of animal-derived proteins like whey. First of all, plant protein is much easier digested than whey protein which contains lactose. Whey proteins are notorious for causing bloat, and other digestive issues. Plant-based proteins also are packed with phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, everything our bodies need, without the negative side effects associated with whey!
Including protein that has been derived from plants not, animals will do your body a world of good. Here are some protein filled recipes from our Food Monster App.
