Recently, a vegan Reddit user posted in the forum r/Vegan confessing that they had accidentally eaten dairy for a whole week before realizing it. User u/ScreenHype explained that they were feeling disappointed in themselves.
Accidentally ate dairy for a whole week

“I recently went to visit my dad who lives abroad, and ahead of time I reminded him that I was vegan and so I couldn’t have real butter, only margarine. I told him that margarine sometimes has milk powder in it, so to double check before buying it, and he told me would.”
“When I got there, I again asked “and you checked that it’s definitely vegan?” and he assured me that it was.”
Every morning during the trip, he made them breakfast with margarine and jam. However, on the last day, he was tired, so he left the margarine and jam on the table.
“I have this in-joke with him where I read French in a really bad accent because I don’t speak it, so I started reading out the ingredients. But then I got to ‘poudre de lactoserum’. It turned out he hadn’t checked for me at all, he’d just assumed that it was vegan because it was margarine, even though I’d told him they sometimes contain dairy.”
They confessed that they felt bad because it was nice of him to make breakfast every morning, but “but I just feel so upset that I’ve been unknowingly putting dairy into my body every day.”
“I know it doesn’t affect my veganism because I genuinely didn’t know, but regardless, those cows still suffered. Anyway, I just wanted to get it off my chest.”
Other Reddit users assured the poster that they should not beat themselves up with one user commenting,
“It happens, and it’s okay. This week I bought a jam that I ate all week before realizing it had eggs in it (eggs! in a freaking jam!). It’s all about intention. You didn’t mean to, and you had pure intentions. Mistakes happen, and you’re not less of a vegan for it.”
If you accidentally eat an animal product without knowing, don’t beat yourself up about it – accidents happen! It’s important to remember that one week of consuming dairy is not going to undo all the benefits of a vegan diet. Don’t let this setback discourage you. Just take it as a learning experience and use it as motivation to stay committed to your vegan values.

Why didn’t you check the ingredient list on the margarine when you arrived? I would have.
