Vegan Restaurants Are Taking Over Detroit!

Just recently, Chive Kitchen, a vegan restaurant located in the suburbs of Detroit, won the title of “Best Vegetarian Restaurant” in Vote 4 the Best. It seems that Chive isn’t the only restaurant of its kind in the area, as Detroit is gaining a reputation as a vegan mecca with options like Detroit Vegan Soul, Chili Mustard Onions, and Ale Mary’s, a restaurant with a dedicated vegan menu and beer list. It seems that for the city of Detroit, veganism is starting a revolution.

Chef Suzy Silvestre of Chive Kitchen explains that, “When opening a vegan restaurant in Farmington people thought I was crazy. But I knew that my food was good and it happened to be meat free. I also knew that as a vegan/vegetarian I was missing the dining experience that I loved. Good options were not offered at restaurants. If I had this issue then I knew many other people did as well. Sure enough, Farmington had vegans living there.”

Silvestre notes that veganism is growing in the city of Detroit for a multitude of reasons. These justifications include going vegan for Animal rights, environmental issues, health reasons, to combat high cholesterol and heart concerns, and for foodies who respect plant-based cooking opposed to dishes relying on animal protein. She also passionately declares that plant-based cooking has so much texture, color, and flavor to play with. It’s no wonder people are taking interest!

Vegan shops and restaurants are popping up everywhere for a reason. Silvestre says that, “The market is there. I follow a lot of vegan restaurants around the world and some will pop up in Nebraska and some other random places. They exist because there is a need for them.”
