The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in conjunction with UCLA committed to transitioning 50% of entrees served on campus to plant-based options by 2027. Kate Jarvis, senior outreach coordinator for food service innovation at HSUS, expressed excitement about UCLA’s commitment, stating, “We are delighted by UCLA’s continued dedication to the welfare of animals and the health of their students and our planet with this impressive goal.”

UCLA, known for its academic excellence and commitment to community impact, has long prioritized sustainability in all facets of campus life. The university’s dining program already offers a diverse array of plant-based meals, with menus providing essential information on dietary restrictions and the carbon footprint of each dish. The popular dining hall Bruin Plate has been serving fresh, wholesome, and plant-forward options since 2013, with plans underway to introduce a new plant-based restaurant outlet within the residential dining program.

According to UCLA senior executive chef Joey Martin, the alliance with HSUS is poised to revolutionize the campus dining experience. “Together, we aim to explore innovative ways to enrich the dining experience for our students, focusing on elevating the appeal of our plant-based dishes to create that ‘wow’ factor,” remarked Chef Martin.

Crucially, UCLA‘s dining team actively seeks input from undergraduate students to ensure their evolving needs and preferences are met. Student groups such as the Animal Welfare Alliance and Lives Without Knives play a pivotal role in gathering feedback and advocating for plant-based options. UCLA student Parker Do expressed optimism about the university’s commitment, highlighting its alignment with UCLA’s core values of sustainability, diversity, and compassion.
