Investigators Link Raw Milk Cheese To E.Coli Outbreak In France

A recent investigation of cases concerning children who developed a disease that causes kidney failure, low red blood count, and destroys blood-clotting cells has been linked to the consumption of raw milk cheese. This disease called hemolytic uremic syndrome is most commonly caused by the consumption of the bacteria, E.coli, which plants itself in the digestive tract and produces harmful toxins in the bloodstream.

These investigations were performed by Santé Publique France, who claims that the consumption of a raw milk cheese called reblochon, is the epidemiological link between these cases. It became more evident that the hemolytic uremic syndrome was caused by E.coli after a similar E.coli outbreak occurred earlier that year.

After sufficient evidence and lab work was done by National Reference Laboratory for E.Coli, the decision to recall over 350 tons of reblochon cheese manufactured at the site of Chabert was made. Canada followed France’s lead and issued a precautionary recall of the raw milk cheese as well to prevent an additional outbreak.

15 children, ages 1 to 5, were included in the investigation of this outbreak. All 15 children ate the cheese in question, and 12 were infected with the same strain of E.coli. In addition, 11 of the 15 children under question developed hemolytic uremic syndrome and, another experienced other symptoms such as diarrhea. One child died after contracting hemolytic uremic syndrome.

The decision to recall the raw milk cheese will hopefully hinder the progression of this E.coli outbreak.
