In a new study published by the International Journal of Cancer led by a team of Harvard officials, researchers found that increasing your fruit and vegetable intake could significantly reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. The most noteworthy of the bunch were cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, and orange vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots.
Compared with women who consume fewer fruits and vegetables, women who eat more than 5 and a half servings on a daily basis decreased their risk of breast cancer by 11%.
Prior research has not been able to come to the same conclusions that this study has. Author of this study, Maryam Farvid, says that “Although prior studies have suggested an association, they have been limited in power, particularly for specific fruits and vegetables and aggressive subtypes of breast cancer.” Farvid also mentions that “This research provides the most complete picture of the importance of consuming high amounts of fruit and vegetables for breast cancer prevention.”
Eating both raw and cooked vegetables offers benefits, and sometimes cooking fruits and vegetables have the power of releasing certain cancer-fighting antioxidants. Doctors are recommending an increased intake of fruits and veggies, while others are urging their patients to consume less meat and dairy.
Vegan doctor, Kristi Funk, explains that meat and dairy can increase your cancer risk. She says, “The everything in moderation mantra rubs me up the wrong way…why consume cancer-causing meats in moderation? So that maybe I can remove a moderate part of your breast?”
Funk hopes that more and more research supports her advocacy for a plant-based diet and all of its benefits.
