When you think of Ikea, images of sleek furniture and stylish home goods may come to mind. However, there’s more to this Swedish retail giant than just flat-pack furniture. For many, the allure of Ikea extends beyond furnishings to its food offerings. Surprisingly, an estimated 30% of Ikea customers visit primarily for the dining experience rather than the shopping.
Among Ikea’s food options, the meatballs and hot dogs have long been fan favorites. But now, there’s a new addition to the menu that’s causing a stir – the Plant Dog. Originally available in Europe, this plant-based hot dog is making its debut in Ikea stores across the United States, starting today.
Helene von Reis, the food manager at Ikea of Sweden, emphasized the company’s commitment to offering more sustainable food options. “Ikea is driven by a vision to create a better everyday life for many people. Through our food business, we can contribute to this by offering more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact compared to animal-based options,” she stated.
The Plant Dog is crafted from a blend of rice protein, apple, onion, salt, pepper, and a hint of smokiness, delivering a sausage-like flavor. What’s more, it promises the same satisfying “snap” as a traditional hot dog, ensuring an authentic hot dog-eating experience for patrons.
Not only is Ikea expanding its plant-based offerings with the introduction of the Plant Dog, but it’s also making them incredibly affordable. Priced at just $0.70, the Plant Dog joins other meat-free menu items like Plant Balls, Veggie Balls, Veggie Dogs, and Strawberry Soft Ice. In fact, the price of the Veggie Dog has been lowered to $0.65, while the traditional hot dog remains at $0.75.
Paul Fite, Country Food Manager at Ikea U.S., expressed excitement about the launch of the Plant Dog. “We know that our hot dogs are beloved by many, and we’re proud to expand our plant-based foods for customers,” he remarked. “Our ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable, and affordable, without compromising on taste.”
To celebrate the arrival of the Plant Dog, Ikea will be hosting a “Plant Dog Baby Shower” at all U.S. stores on Thursday, April 11th. Guests can indulge in the new offering and partake in Plant Dog-themed games, marking the joyous occasion of embracing a more sustainable dining option.
