Spring is finally upon us, and, for many of us, that means the advent of many spring and summer outdoor food happenings like picnics and al fresco dining. And with all this outdoor eating usually comes grill-friendly dishes – think vegan hot dogs, veggie burgers, and the like. For me, spring is the time I do a whole lot of condiment eating on said dishes, meaning it’s time to bring out the stuff that necessitates yummy toppings like ketchup, mustard, relish, vegan mayo, and more. While I do indeed indulge in the aforementioned condiment foods throughout the year, spring is when these foods really come out full force, what with the perfect outside dining weather and all!
This spring, condiment it up, but consider mixing things up a bit with some fun and different condiment combinations:
1. Instead of plopping old faithfuls ketchup and mustard on your vegan hot dog, try a helping of hummus for a surprising flavor punch between that hot dog bun.
2. Ever tried pickle relish on something other than your veggie burger and veggie dogs? This stuff can taste divine on grilled veggie kabobs!
3. Mix your vegan mayo with ketchup for a fun sauce, perfect for those sweet potato French fries you might be cooking up soon!
4. If you’re a guacamole fan (and who isn’t???), add some relish to the normal mix for a delicious zingy flavor pop!
5. If you’re tired of the traditional toppings for your veggie burger, adding a heaping tablespoon of fresh salsa can give you a delicious mix-up. Bonus points for cilantro or pineapple salsa, both of which make veggie burger flavors absolutely sing.
6. For some international flair, add a curry paste atop your veggie hot dogs and burgers.
7. If you’re a hot sauce fan, try Sriracha on your veggie burger!
8. Try some peanut butter spread atop your grilled veggie kabobs for a tangy change of pace.
9. Mix up a vegan BBQ sauce to top some grilled tofu or to marinate a row of veggie kabobs.
10. Teriyaki sauce isn’t just for veggies – try it on your vegan burgers and dogs, or even mixed up in a coleslaw.
We hope these quick tips inspire you to have a little fun mixing up your condiment selection this spring and summer! Let us know your flavor pairing picks in the comments!
