According to New Food Magazine, the new not-for-profit app Food Rescue Hero is using similar technology to Uber Eats and Grubhub to “increase the diversity of food offered to food banks and pantries.”

The app currently has 23,000 volunteer drivers that help deal with “logistical barriers: of donating unwanted food from retail stores in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco, Prince William, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Cincinnati, New Haven, Hasbrouck Heights, and Northern Virginia.

Most food donations are shelf-stable and processed, since storing and transporting fresh products and food that expires quickly would be more difficult. This can lead to health issues, nutritional deficiencies, and a generally unbalanced diet.

Food Rescue Hero is changing all that. The app’s on-demand transport network can redistribute any quantity or kind of food, making it far easier to get healthy food to people in need. Out of all the food they distribute, 87 percent of it is fresh, and 50 percent is fruits and vegetables. The app’s on-demand transport network can redistribute any quantity or kind of food,

Leah Lizarondo, the CEO and Founder of Food Rescue Hero explains, “The traditional mode is very limiting. Food banks and pantries aren’t able to take donations of perishable food because they don’t have the ability to transport it to those who need it quickly enough. Fresh food, which inherently has more nutritional value than shelf-stable goods, needs to be transported quickly, to locations where it can be used right away.”

The platform has redirected 55 million pounds of food to “housing complexes, daycares, community centres, and churches” since 2015. They also implemented a home-delivery service when COVID-19 hit, and plan to reach 100 cities by 2030.
