A new Lancet report has found that obesity and undernutrition are correlated and can often be found in the same home or person. Thanks to the ubiquity of processed foods, people around the world are suffering from obesity and malnutrition.
People have been gaining weight, but not gaining nutrition. As the food system shifts to a dependence on processed foods, those from every economic strata are experiencing this phenomenon. This availability is leading to health consequences for lots of people, especially mothers and children.
Francesco Branca, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director of the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, said on a conference call, “The quality of the food is absolutely poor. So, not enough vitamins and minerals, and cheap food, high in fat, sugar and salt.”
This lack of minerals and vitamins and preponderance of processed foods can lead to obesity, which is tied to type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Obesity and low nutrition are also linked to stroke, pregnancy issues and cancer.
The report focused on solutions to the problem, including changes to the global food system and education on good nutrition. The report recommends a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts ad beans.
