Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed legislation banning the sale of lab-grown meat within the state. The announcement came during a news conference at the Hardee County Cattleman’s Arena, where Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of preserving Florida’s meat production industry.
Joined by Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Wilton Simpson, Governor DeSantis celebrated Florida’s meat production and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting local farmers and ranchers. “Our administration will continue to focus on investing in our local farmers and ranchers, and we will save our beef,” Governor DeSantis declared.
The bill, according to DeSantis, is a response to the World Economic Forum’s advocacy for lab-grown meat and insects as alternative protein sources. Commissioner Simpson commended Florida’s initiative, labeling lab-grown meat as a threat to the state’s agricultural heritage. “Lab-grown meat is a disgraceful attempt to undermine our proud traditions and prosperity, and is in direct opposition to authentic agriculture,” Simpson emphasized. In reality, this decision not only affects the lives of millions of animals but it also impacts the planet.
Governor DeSantis’s office outlined several measures taken to bolster Florida’s agriculture and meat industry, including modernizing the Right to Farm Act to protect agricultural activities from frivolous lawsuits, ensuring tax protections for agri-tourism operators on agricultural lands, simplifying sales tax exemptions for farmers, and investing significantly in the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program. With over 36,000 acres of farmland protected through this program and billions invested in the agricultural industry, Florida aims to fortify its position as a stronghold for traditional farming practices.
