Meatballs of extinct mammoths created in a lab as an alternative to killing animals may seem like a scene from a sci-fi movie, but it’s actually happening in real life. Australian company, Vow, has successfully created lab-grown edible meat from cells, including a meatball made from long-extinct mammoths.

The primary goal of Vow and other similar companies is to remove the need for animal slaughter in meat production and create new kinds of meat in the process. They achieve this by creating lab-grown, edible ‘meat’ from cells, which is a more ethical and sustainable way of producing meat.

Tim Noakesmith, one of Vow’s co-founders, said they chose the woolly mammoth for this project because it’s a symbol of diversity loss and a symbol of Climate change. Mammoths were driven to extinction by human development and hunting, and now, the creation of the mammoth meatball is a step toward tackling the climate crisis.

Over 50 species have been trialed and tested by Vow, including alpaca, buffalo, crocodile, kangaroo, peacocks, and different types of fish. The company is expecting to unveil Japanese quail to diners in Singapore later this year.

“We have a behavior change problem when it comes to meat consumption,” said George Peppou, CEO of Vow. “The goal is to transition a few billion meat eaters away from eating [conventional] animal protein to eating things that can be produced in electrified systems. And we believe the best way to do that is to invent meat. We look for cells that are easy to grow, really tasty and nutritious, and then mix and match those cells to create really tasty meat.”

While plant-based meat alternatives are common, cultivated meat that tastes like the real deal is only sold in Singapore. There are two companies that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe to eat.

Lab-cultivated meat takes up less land and water and removes methane gas. Climate reports often point to the reduction of meat consumption as a way to help end the Climate change crisis. This type of meat is also more ethical and sustainable, and the creation of the mammoth meatball is just the beginning of a new era in meat production.

The creation of lab-grown meat is a fantastic development in the meat industry. It’s more ethical, sustainable, and can help tackle Climate change. As consumers, we have a responsibility to Support these companies and make the switch to lab-grown meat alternatives. By reducing our meat consumption, we can all play our part in creating a healthier planet. So, let’s embrace this new era of meat production and make a positive change for our future.
