With six to eight million animals entering U.S. shelters every year, organizations across the country are fighting tirelessly to help every single animal they can. From dealing with the enormous costs to feed, house, and provide veterinary care for all of the animals, shelters also have to deal with the heartbreaking situation of people surrendering their pets.
Clay County Animal Care and Control in Green Cove Springs, Florida, for instance, recently had to deal with the particularly sad surrender of a ten-year-old Labrador retriever named Duchess.
A woman walked into the Clay County Animal Care and Control, at the time without a dog, and explained to shelter staff she wanted to surrender a dog who had originally belonged to her daughter. Apparently, the daughter had moved away two years ago and left the dog behind. Just a few hours later, the woman returned with Duchess, who was innocent to the fact that she was being abandoned.
The woman had her Grandson with her at the time of the surrender and when the child asked how he could remember the dog, the woman said to take a picture. Heartbreaking!
According to the shelter notes, Duchess is good with children, as well as other dogs and is curious around cats when she initially meets them. According to Petfinder, 24 percent of shelters say that finding homes for older or senior animals is most difficult, so let’s help Duchess find the forever home she deserves! If you, or someone you know, is interested in adopting this sweet girl, you can contact the Clay County Animal Care and Control here.
Please always spay and neuter your pets and urge your friends and family to do the same. Fostering an animal is also a great way to help end the pet homelessness crisis. For other ways you can get involved helping animals, click here. Together, we can end pet homelessness!
