A massive wildfire tore through nearly 1,230 acres of Dartmoor National Park in Devon this week, as the UK experienced record-breaking May temperatures. Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were dispatched on Sunday afternoon and battled the blaze for almost 24 hours before extinguishing it on Monday, according to The Guardian.
The fire erupted during an unprecedented early-May heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 29.3°C at Kew Gardens in London—the hottest May day on record. Wind and dry conditions made the fire especially difficult to control. Emergency crews used specialist vehicles, drones, fogging units, and even leaf blowers to try and contain the flames. Firefighters were supported by Dartmoor rangers and local Commoners.
Though initial reports overestimated the damage at 12,500 acres, the final figure was corrected to 1,230 acres. Authorities urged people to avoid areas near Merrivale and Okehampton and warned the fire could still behave unpredictably. “The dry weather has left Dartmoor highly vulnerable to fire. Please don’t light BBQs or fires,” Dartmoor National Park wrote on X.
The wildfire is one of hundreds already reported this year in the UK. As of May 1st, the National Fire Chiefs Council noted over 430 wildfires had occurred since January—more than any recent year on record. The surge in wildfires is a troubling sign of the accelerating impact of Climate change on the UK’s ecosystems.
Dartmoor is home to rare birds, wild ponies, and fragile peatland. Fires like these are devastating to local biodiversity and long-term environmental stability.
These events are a powerful reminder of how quickly nature can be lost. Choosing a plant-based lifestyle, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting climate-conscious policies are small but powerful ways to protect our planet. Let’s help keep places like Dartmoor wild, green, and safe.
