Sixty horses and four burros have just been released and given back their freedom in the wildlife sanctuary Engler Canyon Ranch. After years of isolation, confinement, and holding pens, the wild mustangs returned to where they belong – and their first steps into freedom were captured on camera, making for the most beautiful reminder that wild animals belong nowhere else but in their natural habitat, unconstrained and free.
They will spend the rest of their lives in a sanctuary at Engler Canyon Ranch, the wildlife preserve being a project of The Serengeti Foundation.
Every year, wild mustangs are gathered from government lands for population control purposes. The mission of The Serengeti Foundation is to give homes to the mustangs awaiting adoption – sometimes for as long as 10 years. On the foundation’s ranch, the horses have over 3500 acres of land to make their home and they can live as close to nature as possible.

"We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such suffering on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living beings, humanity will not find peace." – Albert Schweitzer, physician/Nobel Laureate.
