Electricity bills are hitting families hard, and the reasons go well beyond simple politics. According to Inside Climate News, residential electricity rates rose 5 percent nationwide in 2025, with some states seeing much steeper jumps.
That matters because people do not pay rates in the abstract. They pay monthly bills with real money they often do not have. In Ohio, one mother working three jobs was left staring at a bill above $600. So this is not just an energy story. It is a cost of living story, a health story, and an environment story too.
Several forces are pushing prices up at once. Utilities are spending more on old wires, poles, and substations. Natural gas prices are climbing again. Data centers are demanding huge amounts of power. In some places, climate fueled disasters like wildfires and hurricanes are also making the grid more expensive to maintain. A 2025 study found that state level electricity prices are shaped by a mix of infrastructure costs, fuel prices, and local policy choices.
Still, clean energy is not the villain some fossil fuel allies want people to blame. Research suggests renewable standards have had only a modest effect on rates in most states. In fact, adding more wind and solar can help protect people when gas prices spike. That means the smarter path is not clinging to coal and gas. It is building a cleaner grid that is more efficient, more resilient, and less exposed to fuel shocks.
Americans deserve lower bills and a safer planet. We should push for clean power, fair utility rules, and a more plant based future that puts people and the Earth first.
