According to Erik Barnes in a recent article for GOOD,, science has spoken: wearing socks to bed really does help you sleep better. While the idea might seem divisive—yes, there are entire debates online about “team socks” versus “team bare”—the data points in one clear direction.

A 2018 study found that young men who wore socks to bed fell asleep faster by eight minutes, slept 32 minutes longer, and woke up less frequently through the night compared to those who didn’t. The reason? It’s all about temperature regulation.

Warming your feet causes blood vessels to dilate—a process called distal vasodilation—which signals your body to cool down internally. Michelle Drerup, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Cleveland Clinic, explains that this drop in core body temperature helps you fall asleep more easily. So while socks warm your toes, the effect actually helps your whole body chill out, literally and figuratively.

This concept aligns with other natural sleep aids like taking a warm (not hot) shower before bed or keeping your room cool—around 60ºF is often recommended. These small changes Support your body’s natural readiness for rest. Of course, if you’re already sleeping great, no need to change a thing. But if you’re struggling to get quality rest, it might be time to ditch the no-socks rule.

Let’s face it—better sleep means better choices, and for those living a conscious lifestyle, rest is non-negotiable. If we want to be at our best for the planet, the animals, and ourselves, it starts with getting enough restorative sleep. So go ahead, grab your coziest pair of cruelty-free, plant-based socks, and tuck in. Your body (and the environment) will thank you.
